FAQs

How long have you been practicing and how did you become a clinical herbalist?

I began my herbal journey over ten years ago as an apprentice to an ethnobotanist in western WA. During this apprenticeship I became very ill and was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease. Doctors told me that there was no cure and it would be a slow decline until an early death. After the initial shock wore off I turned to herbs and other natural health strategies and became symptom free in under 6 months.

That experience inspired me to move beyond simply harvesting my own wild foods towards clinical herbalism so that I could help people who wanted to find natural solutions to their chronic health problems.

I graduated from the East West School of Herbology (EWCH) with Michael and Lesley Tierra.

I did my clinical training with KP Khalsa who is also my mentor.

I have done extensive long distance training with Paul Bergner.

I am a registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild.

I have been working with herbs and people since 2006.

What are your current callings?

I currently spend my time as an herbal educator and as an herbal clinician.

As an herbal educator…

I am the Education Director for LearningHerbs. I create original articles and videos for their membership site HerbMentor.com

I have an herbal mentorship program. :)

I am the author of two online courses produced by LearningHerbs: The Taste of Herbs and Herbal Cold Care.

I have a popular blog at www.MethowValleyHerbs.com

I also teach internationally at conferences and private retreats.

As a clinical herbalist…

I work with people who are searching for natural solutions to their chronic health problems. I do this long distance via the telephone and Skype.

You can see my website for this at www.HerbalRemediesAdvice.org

Why do you offer a mentorship program?

I love being a mentor! Working with inspired herbalists all over North America is, well, inspiring!

Offering a mentorship program is also a way I can give back.

I frequently see herbalists struggling to be successful. It’s hard when there is no blueprint for what we do!

I have been very fortunate in my own herbal journey to find the right people at the right time who’ve helped to guide me along the way. In a little over a decade I’ve become a successful herbalist with thousands of students and hundreds of clients, making 100% of my income as an herbalist.

My passion is to see herbalism succeed. And for that to happen we need successful herbalists! It’s an honor for me to share what I’ve learned so that others can find their own successful path.

What happens if you can’t answer my particular question during a mentorship session?

Unfortunately I don’t know everything! But if you have a particular question beyond my own realm of expertise then chances are I know where you can find that information and I will do my best to help you.

How are you different from other herbal mentors?

There are many wonderful herbal mentors out there. I highly recommend you look around and find someone that really resonates with you!

Some of my core qualities are that:

I am both an herbal educator and a clinician. I can help you on your path to being a teacher and/or being a clinician.

I have a good understanding of the three main systems of herbalism: Western Herbalism, Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. And while I consider myself an herbalist, at least half of my practice is also about helping people become healthier through diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes. All of this means that I can offer a wide range of expertise and experience in the realm of herbalism and natural health.

I am very organized and practical. I can help with online endeavors and marketing.

I work with people all over the world by telephone and Skype.

What kind of information do I learn in the mentorship?

Our time together is driven entirely by what you want to know. Here’s a list of frequent topics that mentees bring to the sessions.

  • Intake process
  • Creating case studies
  • Guidance with analysis, treatment strategies and herbal plans
  • Understanding dosage for individuals
  • Creating herbal formulas
  • Creating systems to handle a growing clientele
  • Navigating social media for your business
  • Creating a website that works

Do you offer in-person mentorships?

I do not currently offer any on-site mentorship programs. My mentorship program is done entirely by telephone or Skype.

What type of personality do you work with best.

I work best with bright people who are inspired and self-motivated in their herbal journey.

What is expected of me in the mentorship program?

You will be responsible for scheduling your appointments within the allotted time frame.

You are also responsible for bringing case studies and/or questions to our session.

I do not provide any of the content during our sessions. Instead everything is led by you. That means if you don’t have questions or case studies then we won’t have much to talk about!

Who is your ideal person to work with?
  • You want feedback on your case studies.
  • You have lots of questions about herbs and herbalism that you aren’t finding in books.
  • You want support as you go through another herbal program.
  • You would like help starting your herbal practice.

What type of person is your mentorship not going to work for?

This mentorship program is propelled by your own questions and case studies. If you don’t have case studies or only have a few questions then this mentorship program is probably not a good fit.

Also most of my experience in building an herbal business is for clinicians. I only have limited experience in building an herbal products business. If you have a lot of questions about making and selling herbal products then we may not be a good fit.

I am a member of HerbMentor.com. Is this part of the included services?

No, this program is not affiliated with LearningHerbs.com or HerbMentor.com in any way.

Can I use our time in this mentorship program to get help with my own health concerns?

Working with me in a mentorship relationship is not designed for personal self-healing. Please see my personal consultations for this type of work.

What results can I expect?

That depends on your goals and what you want to bring to the table. I have watched my mentees become more confident in using herbs with people, expand their herbal expertise and grow their herbal business.

How will we work together and what does each session entail?

Each session is an hour in length.

You can schedule your appointments whenever you would like within the time frame of your chosen package. At the time of your appointment you will give me a call at the number provided.

During our sessions you can ask whatever questions you would like or go over any case studies you have.

After our session I email you with a summary of our time together or links and resources relating to the questions you asked. I do not take notes for your case studies however, since it is good practice for you to do this yourself.

You will also receive 6 mentorship emails from me on a variety of topics. I chose these on a variety of topics that are of general interest to the herbalist. They include additional readings and/or exercises which you are welcome to do and discuss with me.

Can I email you for support in-between our mentor sessions?

If you have a 30 second question I am happy to give you a quick reply. However, due to my own busy schedule I ask that you keep your other questions for our sessions.

What are your business hours for doing mentor sessions?

My business hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am to 5pm Pacific time.

If these business hours don’t work for you then unfortunately we won’t be a good fit.

Do people ever sign up again?

Yes. In fact so many students return again that I am only able to open up my mentorship program once or twice a year.

Do you ever offer a one-time consultation instead of a whole program.

Yes. My rate for this is $85. Email me to inquire about availability.

Do you offer a scholarship?

The rates I charge for my mentorship program are half of my normal rate. I am unable to give any additional discounts.

Does your mentorship program count towards the AHG professional membership?

Yes. I keep records of our time together and you are encouraged to do the same. You can read more about the AHG and their suggestions for mentorship here

Okay, I know I want to work with you, can you help me choose which program is best for me?

Absolutely! You can fill out an application here and schedule a free 15-minute conversation with me. We will discuss your goals and figure out which program makes the most sense for you.

If I am not sure I’m ready to get started, how can I sample your work at low cost to see if it’s the right solution for me?

I really want people to feel 100% sure about working with me. Feel free to sign up for my newsletter, browse my website and check out my work at HerbMentor.com.

I have a family and a busy life. Although I really want to have a mentor, I don’t have much time to spare. How much time do I need?

This really varies from person to person. In the least you need enough questions and case studies to fill up our time together. That does take forethought and time. If you are not in a position to prioritize your herbal endeavors, it may not be the right time to work with me.

Okay, I am ready to do this for myself, but I have a couple additional questions. Can we talk on the phone first?

Absolutely. Please visit this link to fill out a short application and schedule a free 15-minute get-acquainted phone call with me.

You are also welcome to email me with questions.
